Shima Seiki will present a multiaxial knitting machine in Frankfurt

By on June 14, 2022 0

Leading textile technology solutions provider Shima Seiki of Wakayama, Japan, along with its Italian subsidiary Shima Seiki Italia, will be exhibiting at Techtextil in Frankfurt, Germany this month.

Shima Seiki’s latest innovation in flat knitting technology applied to the field of technical textiles will be on display – a prototype weft knitting machine capable of inserting multi-axial yarns. The fabrics produced on this machine use the inlay technique for the production of hybrid textiles that combine the stretch characteristics of knitted fabrics with the stability of woven textiles, suitable for various technical applications.

For this, a warp yarn is inserted to further extend its ability to produce 3D-shaped composite and carbon fiber preforms directly on the machine. This is made possible by taking advantage of the fact that flat knitting as a textile production method is able to produce finished products that are shaped to shape and with extra thickness.

Compared to current preform production methods, the savings in post-processing time, material, labor and associated costs are immense, realizing efficient and sustainable production. Shima Seiki’s own yarn unwinding technology is also used for optimum yarn feeding and tension for use with technical yarns that are otherwise difficult to knit. Samples of industrial textiles knitted on the multiaxial machine will also be available for on-site review.

Shima Seiki’s SDS-ONE APEX4 3D design system will also be available for demonstrations. Of particular interest should be its ultra-realistic simulation capability which achieves virtual sampling. When countless variations need to be evaluated before arriving at a final design, virtual product samples can be used to streamline the decision-making process by minimizing the enormous amount of time, cost and material normally associated with the production of real samples for each variation. Once approved, the same data can be converted to machine data for immediate knitting, dramatically reducing lead times.
